  • Lightweight shorts and t-shirt, the hike is 15 minutes in tropical heat
  • Water shoes or athletic shoes, the trail has rocky sections and stairs. Flip-flops are not recommended
  • Hat and sunglasses, for sun protection on the open sections of the trail

What to bring

  • Biodegradable sunscreen, this is mandatory. Regular sunscreen damages the cenote
  • Waterproof phone case, for photos in and around the water
  • Towel, some tours provide them, but bring your own to be safe
  • Change of clothes, you will want dry clothes for the drive back
  • Water bottle, stay hydrated in the tropical heat
  • Small backpack, to carry your things on the hike

  • Jewelry and watches, salt and minerals in the water can damage them
  • Excessive cash, bring just what you need for tips and snacks
  • Heavy cameras without waterproof housing, a phone in a waterproof case is easier

The trail

The nature walk to Hoyo Azul takes about 15 minutes on a well-maintained path through tropical forest. There are wooden stairs descending to the cenote level. The trail is guided, so your guide will set a comfortable pace and point out interesting plants and wildlife along the way.

The trail is moderate difficulty. Most people in reasonable health can complete it. There are handrails on the stairs. For visitors with mobility issues, check with the tour operator about accessibility options.
